Last week 30 lucky Year 6 children got to go on a trip to the Houses of Parliament in London. Whilst there they also took the opportunity to visit a few other famous landmarks. Carry on reading to hear one child's recount of the day along with some photographs of the places visited.
"On Monday
the 14th of October we went to London. It took us around three hours
to get to London. In the middle of our journey we stopped at a service station and
we saw guards. There was about ten of them. After that, we carried on to
London. When we arrived in London we were dropped off near Buckingham Palace.
The queen’s flag was up so Queen Elizabeth II
was in. We saw guards protecting Buckingham Palace. It was amazing!
Unfortunately, we had to carry on.
We saw Clarence house which is the house of
Prince Charles. It was huge but not as big as Buckingham Palace. It
was white. Buckingham Palace was also white.
We saw the
Cenotaph which is a tomb. It was a tomb to remember people in World War I and
World War II. Inside it was nothing.
We went to Trafalgar Square which really is quite small but it was amazing it had history and it had statues. We moved on and saw statue after statue. We
carried on and saw Downing Street amongst other places. In one place there
was a man with a sword. We walked a few steps and saw people on horses with
swords as well.
When we arrived at The Houses of Parliament, the security had a variety of weapons. We had to go through metal detectors. Then when we passed the security test and we were awarded bands which said we could go through.
We went in the House of Commons first. The
first thing we saw was the hall that Guy Fawkes
tried to blow up. In the hall there was stained glass which is glass that
has a design on it. On the walls there was a layer to hold up the original
bricks so they don’t fall and break.
Then a
person who works in the House of Parliament came with someone else. I was in
one group with Maria and she asked us if we recognised anything in the hall. We
said the hall walls had been plastered. We couldn’t find out anymore and she
told us about the stained glass which David Cameron bought for the Queen. We carried
on and we went up some stairs. We saw the faces of the Kings that there have
been. We were asked more questions and most of them were
answered by Adnan.
After that,
we were taken to a room which had a quiz. We had to choose team captains and
Waqas was my team captain and the other captain was Waddah. We had to press
buttons on a remote and if we got the answer right we would win a point. At the
end we won and in my opinion we had the best person Adnan. Then we had a talk
with our local MP Liam Byrne about how he became a MP and what he does.
Now we were
near the end of our trip we bought things from the stall and then we ate our
dinner and we went to the service centre again and this time we saw soldiers.
Then at nearly seven o’clock we arrived back at school and we all went home."
