Year 4 were visited
by Catherine from Birmingham University. She talked to the children about the
work done by the university in researching weather conditions. The children were able to use
infra-red thermometers to record surface temperature of parts of the
playground. They also use a weather monitor to record air temperature and wind
speed.

Year 3 Evacuation Day
"On Thursday, we had a Year 3 World War II themed day where we took part in lots of fun activities linked to the war and the evacuation of young children. We had to come to school dressed as a child from the 1940's and we made labels and suitcases just like the ones the evacuated children used during the war. We learned how to dance the Jive and how to sing some of the popular songs from the war time years, such as 'It's a long way to Tipperary' and 'Pack up your troubles'. In order to have an evacuation party, we made some party foods using the types of food available during the ration, such as jam sandwiches and little fairy cakes."

Grand Opening of Phlebotomy Unit
This morning, we visited Heartlands hospital because our
artwork had been displayed in the new blood unit. If ever any children go for a
blood test, they will see our pictures brightening the room!
We also saw the Chief executive officially opening the children’s
phlebotomy unit by cutting a ribbon.

Year 5 & 6 Theatre Trip - The Wind in the Willows
On Wednesday some children from Year 5 and 6 went to the Crescent Theatre to watch a production of The Wind in the Willows.
The play tells the tale of Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad. When Mole goes boating with the Water Rat instead of spring-cleaning, he discovers a new world. As well as the river and the Wild Wood, there is Toad's craze for fast travel which leads him and his friends on a whirl of trains, barges, gipsy caravans and motor cars and even into battle.
"I thought the play was really exciting. I particularly liked the fact that there were so many different characters, some of which were wearing some very realistic costumes. I also found the play very hilarious in parts."

Year 3 and 4 Theatre Visit - James and the Giant Peach
On Monday 46 children from Years 3 and 4 went to The Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham to watch a production of the classic Roald Dahl story 'James and the Giant Peach'. The adaptation tells the story of James, a lonely boy who lives with his Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, the most revolting Aunts in England. They make him work and slave and never let him play with other children. Then one day he meets a mystical old man who gives him a bag that contains the strongest magic in the world has ever known. When James accidentally spills the bag near an old peach tree, the most incredible things start to happen. That is when James' adventures begin.
"I thought the play was great fun. I really liked all the lights and costumes. It was very realistic."

Children in Need 2012
On Friday we took part in a Children in Need fund raising day. The day began with a fantastic class assembly by 5B, all about Children in Need and the various good causes the charity supports. We even had a visit from Pudsey bear.
At break time we held a chocolate tombola. The tombola was organised by the school council, who wrote to several local businesses asking them to donate chocolate, as well as collecting donations from the staff. Children paid 20p for a ticket and any ticket ending in a 0 or 5 was a winner.
Other highlights of the day included a special non-uniform day where staff and children came to school wearing either spots or their pyjamas. Some people even managed both by wearing spotty pyjamas. We also had a treat at lunchtime when we were served a special Pudsey Cake for dessert which had been specially made by one of our talented cooks.
All together we managed to raise £1,083 for such a great cause.

Playground Makeover
You may have noticed a few changes going on over the last few weeks around the school. It is all part of our whole school playground developmental.
During the summer holidays stage one took place with the demolishing of the old toilet blocks to make way for our super new enclosed sports pitch.
The makeover moved on another stage this week with the grand opening of our brand new climbing equipment in all three playgrounds.
We hope you all enjoy playing on the new equipment.
