Children in Need 2012

On Friday we took part in a Children in Need fund raising day. The day began with a fantastic class assembly by 5B, all about Children in Need and the various good causes the charity supports. We even had a visit from Pudsey bear.

At break time we held a chocolate tombola. The tombola was organised by the school council, who wrote to several local businesses asking them to donate chocolate, as well as collecting donations from the staff. Children paid 20p for a ticket and any ticket ending in a 0 or 5 was a winner.

Other highlights of the day included  a special non-uniform day where staff and children came to school wearing either spots or their pyjamas. Some people even managed both by wearing spotty pyjamas. We also had a treat at lunchtime when we were served a special Pudsey Cake for dessert which had been specially made by one of our talented cooks.

All together we managed to raise £1,083 for such a great cause.

Playground Makeover

You may have noticed a few changes going on over the last few weeks around the school. It is all part of our whole school playground developmental.

During the summer holidays stage one took place with the demolishing of the old toilet blocks to make way for our super new enclosed sports pitch.

The makeover moved on another stage this week with the grand opening of our brand new climbing equipment in all three playgrounds.

We hope you all enjoy playing on the new equipment.

Eid Celebrations

We kicked off this year's Eid celebrations in school with a visit from a Bangra dance company, who led a whole school assembly. They demonstrated several different Bollywood dances before teaching us a few moves as well.
Later we enjoyed a special Eid lunch, where everyone was invited to stay for dinners and join in with an Eid buffet.

Black History Month

As part of Black History Month, each year group chose a famous person to research. The work produced was shared in an assembly and then used to display within the school.

We finished Black History Month with a special African Drumming assembly. We had a visitor from Drum Voice who led the assembly alongside the Anti Racist Council.

Some children from each of the different year groups got to have a go. It was lots of fun and very loud!

Bell Heath Residential Trip

Last week, 48 Year 5 & 6 children went on a three day residential trip to Bell Heath Outdoor Education Centre on the outskirts of Birmingham.

During the visit the children had the opportunity to take part in a variety of different outdoor activities, including:

  • Rock climbing on the climbing wall

  • Shelter building with tarpaulin and natural materials

We had to work together as a team to build the best shelter.
Carefully choosing the best spot for our shelter.
We worked together to find ways of attaching the tarpaulin to the trees.
Once we had finished we had to test the shelters out.
We were told the shelters needed to be waterproof.
Some worked...
others didn't!

  • Archery
We were shown how to hold the bow safely and correctly.

Then we had a go at shooting at the targets.
Even the teachers had a go!
  • Team building activities
We had to work together to complete the different tasks.

  • Bush crafts

We went pond dipping.
We collected stones, twigs and sticks from the forest.

As well as some more colourful objects.
Then we used them to create some forest art.

The Royal Wedding

On the 28th March 2011, at Bordesley Green Primary School we celebrated the Royal Wedding. It was a non-uniform day and all the children had to wear wedding clothes in red, white or blue to represent the Union Jack (British flag). Lessons were as normal, however activities were based around the Royal Wedding and in the afternoon we continued celebrating by making arty, crafty things within our classrooms. We were all given paper plates (before Easter holidays) to take home; we had to decorate the plate as a souvenir for the Royal Wedding. Our decorated plates were then bought into school and placed on the classroom doors, furthermore each child, who bought a plate in, was awarded an ice-lolly! In KS1, some of the children had a street party and enjoyed celebrating the big event, in style. It was a fantastic day!
